The Inspiration Behind the Mythology

Author's Note from The Soulmate Algorithm by Mark Maruska.

In crafting the world of this novel, I was inspired by nature’s elegant forms, particularly the spiral—a universal symbol of growth, connection, and continuity. This shape became central to the mythology of the fictional pikopiko shell, a spiraling seashell imbued with meaning in the story.

The pikopiko shell and its mythology are entirely fictional, but their creation was sparked by the real-world pikopiko fern, whose unfurling fronds resemble a delicate spiral. While drawing inspiration from this natural shape, I set out to create something original and distinct from other cultural or symbolic spiral motifs. The deity Pikoatua, also fictional, reflects the symbolic nature of spirals as agents of connection and destiny within the novel’s world.

The mythology, shell, and deity play a significant role in guiding characters toward their soulmates, symbolizing personal growth and connection. It is through this symbolism that I aimed to honor the cultural and natural elements that inspired my work, without misrepresenting or appropriating them. The mythical statue and shell pendant presented here are my imaginative interpretations, created to celebrate their natural beauty and capacity to inspire storytelling.

Thank you for exploring this world with me. I hope this novel’s themes resonate with you as much as they did with me during its creation.

With gratitude, Mark Maruska.
